Ancient Civilizations Organizer

March 6, 2014
Here's the classroom blog we looked at today in class.
Tonight, please be sure to complete your Ancient Civilizations organizer.

Friday, February 28, 2014
Today's class will have two parts. First, you will spend some time thinking about and discussing a recent archaeological discovery. Watch these two video clips (1 & 2)to get some background on the article you will read about the discovery. Next, read the article, marking up the text for vocabulary that I circled. This means that for each word or phrase, you should write the meaning in the margin and underline the context clues that helped you determine the meaning. Discuss the following critical questions as a class:
1. In this case, what tools or techniques were used to help archaeologists reconstruct the past? What connections can you make to other discoveries we have discussed?
2. "As the climate changed and became warmer, said Barton, forests formed and that left less food." How might the change of climate have led to less food for mammoths?

After your discussion, please work independently to take a quiz on this reading. You will hand in the text as well as the quiz, so be sure to mark up the text to show me where you found the answer to each question. To do this, you will underline the helpful text and write Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4 in the margin near each clue to the answer.

As you finish, please drop off your work on the stool, stapling the quiz page on top. Grab a Chrome book and return to your seat to write this week's Learning Log blog post. Remember to include the label, Learning Log. Please use this document as a reminder of how to complete this assignment and visit my most recent blog posts to see some high quality examples generated by your classmates. When you finish, please return and plug in your Chrome book and take read independently. I will be collecting your purple folders again on Monday, so please be sure it is up to date and represents your best work.

Monday, February 24, 2014
Today you will finish reading the Ancient Rome book. Like when you began reading this book, you will record the main idea of each section in an organizer.

*If you finish your assignments today, you may read independently or begin working on a #100WC blog post. The prompt is here, and is titled week 22. You may have to scroll down a bit to find it. Please label the post with #100WC. You will have to create a new label to do this. It is important that you include the # symbol as well.

I hope you enjoyed yesterday's article while I was out. I found it particularly interesting, as I was able to reflect upon my trip to India just a few years ago, as I read. Today we will spend some time digging back into our small group reading books. We will discuss them both aloud and online in Edmodo. We will also spend some time thinking about the governments of Ancient Rome.
Monday, February 3, 2014
1. Read the text independently. Mark up for vocabulary- circle challenging word or phrase, underline helpful context clues, record meaning or synonym in the margin. Notice- I circled some words for you! Read with a purpose, and feel free to jot notes. These questions will be the focus of your group discussion.
2. When directed by teacher, meet in groups to discuss questions. Revisit text often for evidence. Add notes to your text.
3. Independently complete quiz with similar questions. This will give me information about how well you listened and collaborated in your group.
4. Done? Construct and begin reading A-Z Reader, Walking in Roman Footsteps.

Welcome to Genius Hour! I am so excited for us to begin researching. We will be working in the library today and using Noodle Tools to keep track of our sources. Please take advantage of the incredible collection of web resources that Mrs. Lamoureux has made available through the media center website. My expectation is that you will focus your research on these tools as well as the books in the library.

At the end of our time together, you will reflect on your persistence as well as your contribution to our classroom community.

Tuesday, January 28, 2014
Today in class we will have two main focuses.

1. First we will be reading a passage about Julius Casesar, who you began learning about during yesterday's video. After you have read, I'd like you to log into Edmodo and complete the quiz I assigned. As you complete the quiz, please be sure to reference the text. Please underline the text evidence in the passage that supports each answer, and "code" it. By coding the text, I am asking you to write Q1 near the underlined text that helped you answer question 1, Q2 for question 2 etc. Be sure you name is on the reading and place it neatly in the paper sorter on my desk. You will be assessed on your responses and your coding. Here's an example of a coded piece of text.

2. Next, you will publish your Prove your Passion Paragraph on your blog. Remember, you have added Blogger to your apps, so it will always be available to you when you are signed in to Chrome. Please make sure to give your post an attention grabbing title, and make any revisions I suggested to you in Google Docs. If you need help posting your work, you might want to check out this resource. Please do not play any videos without headphones. Once you have posted, please complete this form to let me know.

Done? When you complete these assignments, please begin working on the final section of your reading group book. You will find the recording sheets next to the book bins. Check out some of the great thick questions that involve quotations.
